They continued to compete well in the second half with Charlie and Robin going close again. Panthers forced 2 corners and Stripes were lucky not to concede when they failed to pick up the runners, however from a third corner late in the game Panthers equalised with a header.

27/11/11 - Brewood Juniors 3, Stafford Rangers Stripes 0
Stripes failed to score again but the 3-0 scoreline was a little harsh on them. The first half was very even with the teams only separated by a Brewood goal that came directly from a corner with the wind playing a huge part. The second half was also close but the main difference was the finishing. Charlie Woolman made several good saves but Brewood scored again to make it 2-0 before Haydn Jennings was unfortunate to have been adjudged to have fouled an opponent in the box. The penalty was convincingly dispatched to complete the scoring. Stripes overall play was good and they just need to keep their concentration during games and work on their finishing.

The second game of the morning was another competitive affair. Early on there was little to choose between the teams, Soccer School took the lead when a shot was well saved by stand in ‘keeper Harvey Gomersall only for the ball to rebound off Haydn Jennings and back over the line. This didn’t deter Stripes and they kept up their energetic play, Charlie Owen beat 2 players down the left and his shot was saved by the ‘keeper. Tom Bagshaw-Ray collected the loose ball, took his time to then lay the ball back to Ryan Shaw who smashed it home to level the scores before half time.
In the second half, Tom was again involved when he laid the ball into Ryan’s path, he then found Eren Eskin bursting into the box to fire home. Stripes penalty curse then struck again when Ryan became the 3rd player to miss from the spot this season after Tom was fouled in the box. Their player broke from halfway, outpaced the Stripes defence and rounded second half stand in ‘keeper Tom Bagshaw-Ray before slotting home. Stripes bounced back from their defeat the previous week by producing arguably their best performance since they formed last season. They started very brightly against a talented Brewood side and didn’t allow their visitors time to settle. Their early energy was rewarded when Tom Bagshaw-Ray’s cross-shot found the far corner of the net. Soon afterwards, Billy Willday’s shot was palmed onto the post by the ‘keeper and Tom’s breakaway effort was also saved. However, Stripes doubled their lead when Tom fired a first time effort across the ‘keeper for a fine goal. The best move of the half saw Billy and Tom work a great one-two for Billy to finish for a 3-0 lead. Brewood then scored with the last kick of the half with a neat turn and finish inside the box.
Stripes didn’t let that goal affect them and they pressed forward at the start of the second half. Charlie Owen was working his magic down the left and one fine dribble ended with him being brought down in the area for a penalty. Charlie took the penalty himself but the ‘keeper produced a fine save to deny him. The game then swung from end to end with chances going begging for both sides including Harvey Gomersall firing just over and Robin Ahitan having a goal disallowed for Stripes after a push. Stripes ground out a hard fought victory against a spirited Brereton side. After a lively start they took the lead when Robin Ahitan’s persistence down the right paid off when he broke free, the ‘keeper spilt his cross and Charlie Owen was on hand to score. Stripes had further chances to extend their lead, however they failed to clear a Brereton corner and conceded an equaliser to make it 1-1 at half time.
The second half continued in a similar fashion, Billy Willday had a shot saved and then Stripes took the lead. A corner bounced around the box before Ryan Shaw reacted first to drill the ball home giving the keeper no chance. The play continued to be end to end and Stripes were lucky when Brereton rattled the post with a late effort but they dug in to claim victory.
Man of the match was Hayden Jennings who showed both great commitment in his play and versatility when having to switch positions across the midfield.

Stripes produced their best performance of the season to defeat high flying PSV. They took the game to their opponents from the off and never let them settle into their passing game. Stripes were sharp into the tackle and broke forward with purpose, creating several chances in a lively first half with Ryan Shaw pulling his shot just wide on one occasion to leave the score 0-0 at half time. The second half continued to see Stripes work tirelessly to create more chances with Billy Willday hitting the post from one break away. Then the moment that Stripes had deserved finally came – Charlie Owen went clear down the left, cut inside and placed his shot across the ‘keeper into the far corner to send his team mates and the supporters wild. PSV pressed for an equaliser and Charlie Woolman made some crucial saves, including from a “one on one” where he stood tall to block a powerful strike. Overall, it was a fantastic performance and result which showed what can be achieved through sheer determination and effort to back up the players’ undoubted skills.
There could have been 10 Man of the match awards, on this occasion Ryan Shaw shaded it as he covered a lot of ground and never gave in when battling with the larger PSV players.

Stripes made slow start and never really got into the game at all. They gave a strong Hawkins side too much room and by standing off them, allowed them to score 3 goals in the first half without putting enough tackles in. After the break, Hawkins added 2 more before Stripes at least started to pass the ball and create some half chances. Robin Ahitan crossed for Billy Willday to tap in but Hawkins added another goal before the end.

Stripes went some way to making amends following their defeat in the last game with a much needed win. Their performance was in stark contrast to the previous game with a much more committed approach. Haydn Jennings started things off with a close range tap in and Billy Willday fired in a second which the keeper could only parry onto the post before it crossed the line. Harvey Gomersall then won the ball in midfield, played it wide to Robin Ahitan who crossed for Tom Bagshaw-Ray to score. Tom then returned the favour to tee up Robin to make it 4-0 at half time. In the second half Tom poached his second goal before his shot was parried by the keeper and Charlie Owen smashed in the rebound. Robin finished off the scoring with his second before the end.
Man of the match was Robin Ahitan who scored 2 good goals and worked hard up and down the wing.

Stripes started the game on the front foot and created several early chances. A quick throw found Billy Willday whose fired home. Then, Eren Eskin played the ball wide to Hayden Jennings who slid a great pass across the face of goal for Charlie Owen to score from close range. Bereton then hit the post just before half time but the second half continued with Stripes creating chances and from a Charlie Owen corner, Billy Willday tapped in to make it 3-0. They couldn’t add to the lead and Brereton grabbed a consolation goal late on.

Unfortunately, Stripes couldn’t build on their earlier performance when they faced Berkswich. They weren’t quick enough into the tackle, allowed their opponents time on the ball and Stripes found themselves 2 goals down towards the end of the first half. Eren Eskin then fed the ball to Billy Willday who let fly from distance and found the top corner for a great goal to make it 2-1 at half time. However, Stripes still struggled to compete into the second half and Berkswichs’ strength showed when they added 2 more goals. Billy Willday then briefly gave Stripes hope when he raced away to finish with a great shot into the corner but a mix up in defence led to Berkswich scoring a fifth before the end.
Man of the match was Ryan Shaw who deputised in goal, made some crucial blocks and did very well with his kicking.

Stripes returned to action after the long break with a Shield game against Milford. They quickly took the lead when Tom Bagshaw-Ray showed great footwork to beat a defender near the bye-line before cutting the ball back for Haydn Jennings to tap in. Stripes doubled their lead when a Charlie Owen corner found its way to Tom Bagshaw-Ray who helped the ball over the line. Milford fought back and scored and then Charlie Woolman made a good save to keep Stripes in front. Charlie Owen then found the net with a great free kick to make it 3-1 at half time. The second half saw Stripes have plenty of possession and several chances but they couldn’t add to their lead.
Man of the match was Tom Bagshaw-Ray who, apart from scoring held the ball up well with great link up play to bring his team mates into the game.

Stripes started a little slowly and PSV took the lead from a great cross and close range header. This didn’t deter Stripes though and they started to work hard to match their opponents. Robin Ahitan fired a great strike low into the corner to equalise and Stripes were then on top for a period. PSV then took advantage of a lapse at the back to take a 2-1 lead into half time. Stripes started strongly in the second half, Tom Bagshaw-Ray slipped the ball through to Billy Willday who shot just wide. Then, from another attack the ball hit a PSV defender’s hand and the referee awarded a penalty. Tom Bagshaw-Ray stepped up to coolly score to level things at 2-2. Unfortunately, although Stripes pressed forward in search of a winner PSV were more clinical and scored 2 late goals to win the game. Although defeated, Stripes showed great progress from when they where well beaten by PSV on the opening day of the season.
Man of the match was Harvey Gomersall who made some great interceptions at the back and started several attacks with his passing.

Stripes started their Shield campaign with a tough fixture against Hawkins and took an early lead when Charlie Owen’s shot slipped through the keepers hands. Stripes had chances to add to the lead before Hawkins started to get their game together and the pressure finally told as they scored 2 in quick succession to go 2-1 ahead. Stripes could have leveled when Charlie Owen passed to Tom Bagshaw-Ray who broke down the left, beat the defender and pulled the ball across the face of the goal but unfortunately there was no one there to finish it off.
The second half proved difficult and Hawkins’ quality showed with 3 further goals – they were sharper and stronger across the pitch and Stripes can learn from the game in terms of needing to be first the ball and not standing off their opponents.
Man of the match was Joe Porter who worked hard in defence with some good tackles and clearances.

This game proved to be even in terms of goals, although Stripes can count themselves unlucky not to have won. They got off to the worst possible start when a Berkswich shot was well saved by Charlie Woolman, the rebound was hit goal wards and Harvey Gomersall could only divert the ball into his own goal. Stripes stepped up a gear and began to push forward. They equalised when Charlie Owen sent in a corner from the right and the ball ended up in the net via a touch from the goal keeper and a Berkswich defender’s head for an own goal. The first half remained fairly even and at the start of the second, Stripes had a great chance to score. Robin Ahitan and Tom Bagshaw-Ray exchanged passes down the right and Tom squared the ball for Billy Willday who unfortunately lifted his shot over the bar. Stripes continued to pass the ball well, regularly finding Billy Willday to attack down the left and could have scored 2 or 3 more whilst at the other end Charlie Woolman had to be quick off his line with good saves on a couple of occasions to keep the scores level.
Man of the match was Charlie Owen who passed the ball well and worked hard attacking and defending.

Stripes ground out a hard fought victory against Panthers in their penultimate game of the preliminary league. Early exchanges were even, Billy Willday had his shot saved at the near post and Panthers then broke forward to take the lead. Charlie Owen then cut in from the left and let fly from long range, beating the keeper with a great curling effort into the top corner. Stripes then had a succession of corners from the right with Robin Ahitan delivering some great balls into the danger area and from one of these, a Panthers defender was unfortunate and turned the ball into his own net.
Panthers responded before half time and broke away to equalise after Stripes failed to close their opponents down.
The second half continued at a lively pace and Stripes edged ahead via Tom Bagshaw-Ray’s calm finish under the keeper and Charlie Owen made the points safe with another good finish, lifting the ball over the keeper. Overall, a great performance with every player giving their all backed by plenty of encouragement from the sidelines.
Man of the match was Eren Eskin who again showed great commitment and determination in the middle of the pitch. This level of effort was in evidence across the whole team.

There was no respite as Stripes then had to quickly get ready for Penkridge, another tough team who had a number of strong players in their side. Stripes were on the back foot early on and Charlie Woolman was called upon to make a series of fine saves. Penkridge took the lead and soon followed it up with a second and to fair it had been coming as Stripes sat back. Stripes then started to assert themselves on the game and Robin Ahitan carried the ball through midfield before slipping a great pass into Tom Bagshaw-Ray who made no mistake to reduce the deficit just before half time.
Almost straight away in the second half, Stripes leveled things when Ryan Shaw found Tom Bagshaw-Ray who scored. However, Stripes fell behind again when Charlie Woolman saved well only for the ball to drop to a Penkridge player to score. Stripes were not despondent and kept pressing forward, Charlie Owen lifted the ball goalwards and Tom Bagshaw-Ray was on hand to divert it past the keeper to level things once more at 3-3. This spurred Stripes on with Tom Bagshaw-Ray scoring his and the team’s fourth and Charlie Owen wrapped up; the points as he broke clear and scored with a very cool finish down to the keeper’s right.
Man of the match was Charlie Woolman who kept Stripes in the game early on with some great saves.

Stripes ended the Preliminary league in a creditable 8th place out of 13 teams, winning 5 of their last 6 games. Stafford Rangers Stripes (4) v Brereton Social (0)
Stripes were keen to build on their previous games 2 weeks with another good performance. The first half was a closely fought contest with only Charlie Owen’s goal separating the sides. Ryan Shaw took a quick throw in down the right and Charlie raced away to finish well. Stripes knew they needed to work hard if they were to win the game and they stepped up a gear in the second half. Charlie Owen added a second soon after the re-start, pouncing on a rebound when Robin Ahitan’s shot was saved. They kept the pressure up and came close to adding to the score with a series of corners and near misses. From one of the corners, Harvey Gomersall scored the third via a deflection and Tom Bagshaw-Ray added a fourth with a well taken shot from a Billy Willday cut back.
Man of the match was Ryan Shaw who was committed in every tackle at the back and organised his team mates in front of him.

Stafford Rangers Stripes (1) v Hawkins Sports Juniors (4)
Stripes started with the same team that finished the last game well and soon knew they were in a tough game against strong and quick opponents. Following a fairly even start, Hawkins took the lead with a fortunate goal – the ball rebounded off the post and hit Charlie Woolman on the back before crossing the line. They soon added a second when Stripes didn’t clear their lines when they had the chance to do so in the corner. Hayden Jennings then gave Stripes hope with a close range finish from Billy Willday’s cross just before half time.
Stripes applied pressure into the second half and created a number of chances to level the scores with Charlie Owen twice going close, the second effort forcing a great save from the ‘keeper. Hawkins threw bodies in the way of several Stripes shots as they worked hard to retain the lead. However with Stripes pushing forward, Hawkins broke out to kill the game off with 2 late goals. The final score line was harsh on Stripes who worked hard and nearly leveled the score in the second half.
Man of the match was Eren Eskin whose determination and brave tackling belies the fact he is one of the smallest players in the team.

Stafford Rangers Stripes (8) v Milford Athletic (0)
Stripes finally gained a much needed win against Milford. They started very strongly and soon had their opponents pressed back into their own half. Harvey Gomersall struck the post with an early free-kick and it wasn’t long before Stripes took the lead via Tom Bagshaw-Ray’s left footed strike. Tom added a second soon afterwards and Robin Ahitan got in on the act with the third. Billy Willday then weighed in with 2 to cap his fine first half performance and there was still time for Tom Bagshaw-Ray to complete his hat-trick before half time. The second half saw Stripes add 2 more with Robin Ahitan grabbing his second of the match from close range and Tom Bagshaw-Ray his fourth following a determined run by Haydn Jennings through the middle of the pitch. Stripes gave a debut to Eren Eskin in the second half and he impressed with his tackling and determination.
Man of the match was Tom Bagshaw-Ray for his hard work and clinical finishing skills.
Team: Ryan Shaw, Joe Porter, Hayden Jennings, Harvey Gomersall (C), Robin Ahitan, Billy Willday, Tom Bagshaw-Ray. Subs: Charlie Owen (Billy Willday), Eren Eskin (for Joe Porter)
Stafford Rangers Stripes (4) v Eccleshall Eagles (1)
Following their first win, it was important that Stripes continued their good work in the next game. They again started brightly and were awarded a penalty following a handball in the box. The keeper was unlucky as he saved Tom Bagshaw-Ray’s penalty but the ball fell back to Tom to score at the second attempt. Soon afterwards, Eccleshall had a free kick and the ball flew past an unsighted Ryan Shaw in the Stripes goal for the equaliser. Previously, this might have knocked their confidence but Stripes re-grouped and kept pushing forward in search of goals. Tom Bagshaw-Ray raced down the right and his cross reached Harvey Gomersall who laid the ball into Charlie Owens’ path and he made no mistake to score to take a slim 2-1 lead into half time. In the second half, Stripes played some of their best football so far this season as the confidence flowed. Charlie Owen scored his second of the game but soon afterwards Stripes had a let off when Eccleshall were awarded a penalty but fortunately they missed the target from the spot. This seemed to spur Stripes on and Robin Ahitan wrapped up the points when he controlled the ball in the area and kept his composure to score.
Man of the match was Charlie Owen who showed determination in his overall play and scored 2 well taken goals. A special mention goes to Ryan Shaw who played well as the stand in goalkeeper.

Stafford Rangers Stripes (1) v Brewood Juniors (6)
Stripes returned to action after a 2 week absence and started slowly against a strong Brewood side, soon finding themselves 3 goals down as they struggled to compete. Robin Ahitan had a chance to reduce the deficit but his shot was saved by the ‘keeper. Brewood scored twice more to leave Stripes 5-0 down at half time and at risk of suffering a heavy defeat. There was a feeling of déjà vu as having been in a similar position against PSV Stone on the first day of the season, some strong words at half time saw Stripes emerge in the second half with renewed confidence and determination to match their opponents. They began to create chances and Tom Bagshaw-Ray broke away to drive the ball home. Further chances were created with Billy Willday having his shot saved by the ‘keeper and Charlie Owen surging down the right to see his cross-shot flash across goal. Brewood scored again but Stripes can be proud of their second half effort where they proved they can compete and match strong teams when they apply themselves.
Man of the match was Billy Willday who, after replacing the injured Harvey Gomersall took the game to Brewood and drove Stripes on with his energy.
Team: Charlie Woolman, Joe Porter, Haydn Jennings, Robin Ahitan, Harvey Gomersall, Charlie Owen (C), Tom Bagshaw-Ray. Sub: Billy Willday (For Harvey Gomersall)
Stafford Soccer School (5) v Stafford Rangers Stripes (3)
Stripes made the early running but they have a habit of switching off and on this occasion Soccer School took the lead against the run of play. Stripes were then awarded a free kick outside the area and Harvey Gomersall stepped up and struck a great effort into the top right corner, giving the keeper no chance. This should have given Stripes confidence to push on but again they stood off their opponents in and around their own area and Soccer School scored twice to take a largely undeserved 3-1 lead into the break. At the start of the second half there was renewed hope when Robin Ahitan collected Charlie Owen’s pass to score but almost immediately a speculative effort from Soccer School sneaked in at the near post when Charlie Woolman thought it was going wide. Stripes continued to press forward with Robin Ahitan firing wide and then being denied by the cross bar with a great header. Against the run of play, Soccer School broke away to make it 5-2 and although Tom Bagshaw-Ray scored again for Stripes, there was not enough time to stage a comeback.
Stripes didn’t deserve to lose and if they had taken some of their chances could have won convincingly – something to work on before the next round of games.
Man of the match was Robin Ahitan who worked hard and with a bit more luck could have had a hat-trick.
Team: Charlie Woolman, Joe Porter, Haydn Jennings, Harvey Gomersall, Tom Bagshaw-Ray, Billy Willday, Charlie Owen (C) . Sub: Robin Ahitan (for Tom Bagshaw-Ray), Tom back on (for Hayden Jennings)

Stafford Rangers Stripes (1) v Stafford Rangers Juniors (9)
Things didn’t get any easier for Stripes following the previous week’s disappointing results. They always knew it would be difficult against an experienced and quick Rangers side, however they didn’t expect to be beaten so heavily. As against PSV Stone in their last game, Stripes started well and showed some signs of perhaps being able to match their opponents. However, Rangers took an early lead after the Stripes defence had pushed out without marking runners. The highlight of the game for Stripes was their well taken goal – Charlie Owen swung in a cross at the second attempt after his corner was initially blocked and Tom Bagshaw-Ray was on hand at the far post to bury a header firmly into the net to level the scores. However, Rangers regained the lead immediately from the kick off with a long range effort while ‘keeper Charlie Woolman had switched off.
Unfortunately things went downhill from there with Rangers racing into a 5-1 lead at half time. Although they added a further 4 in the second half, Stripes kept working to try and contain them but were well beaten by a better side at the end.
Man of the match was Hayden Jennings who never gave in and kept working and tackling to the end.
Team: Charlie Woolman, Joe Porter, Billy Willday, Robin Ahitan, Hayden Jennings, Charlie Owen (C), Tom Bagshaw-Ray. Subs: Harvey Gomersall (For Joe Porter), Ryan Shaw (for Robin Ahitan)
Berkswich FC (4) v Stafford Rangers Stripes (1)
Stripes came into the game knowing that they were capable of gaining the their first points of the season. A poor start lead to Berkswich taking an early lead, however Stripes rallied and dominated most of the play for the remainder of the half. They created several chances with Robin Ahitan firing wide and Charlie Owen cutting inside and narrowly missing the far corner with his shot. Charlie then broke down the right and fired across the face of goal but there was no one there to finish it off.
Still trailing into the second half, Stripes carried on where they left off with Hayden Jennings having his shot blocked by a defender. Stripes then let Berkswich take a stronger hold on the game with 2 quick goals caused by individual errors and standing off them as they broke forward. Tom Bagshaw-Ray then skillfully created space in the box and fired goal wards only for the ‘keeper to make a good save. The ball fell to Harvey Gomersall who had pushed forward and he slotted home the rebound. Whilst that gave a glimmer of hope for Stripes, it was undone when Berkswich added a fourth late in the game.
The final score was harsh on Stripes as they deserved to get something out of the game. With a free week coming up, Stripes will be working hard to improve and ensure they get points on the board when they return in early October.
Man of the match was Charlie Owen who as captain, lead by example with his tireless running and passing.
Team: Charlie Woolman, Joe Porter, Harvey Gomersall, Ryan Shaw, Hayden Jennings, Robin Ahitan, Charlie Owen (C) . Subs: Billy Willday (For Robin Ahitan), Tom Bagshaw-Ray (For Hayden Jennings)

Stafford Rangers Stripes (2) v Stafford Falcons (4)
Stripes came into their opening fixtures of the season without goalkeeper Charlie Woolman who was away. Stripes started very brightly with a number of chances being created but unfortunately not taken. Stripes continued to dominate much of the play during the first half and eventually took one of their chances when Harvey Gomersall played Tom Bagshaw-Ray in behind the Falcons defence. Tom raced away and although the keeper managed to keep out his first effort he kept his composure to slot home at the second attempt to take a deserved lead into half time.
Falcons started to get a grip of the game in the second half with Stripes not picking up players as they broke forward leaving Joe Porter isolated at the back. Falcons equalized and then raced into a 3-1 lead while Stripes began to visibly tire. Robin Ahitan scored to make it 3-2 following a goal mouth scramble which gave hope but as Stripes pressed for an equaliser, Falcons broke away again to score a fourth. Overall a disappointing result following the excellent start to the game.
Man of the match was Joe Porter with a sterling display at the back whilst often being left to defend on his own.
Team: Ryan Shaw, Joe Porter, Harvey Gomersall, Haydn Jennings, Billy Willday, Charlie Owen, Tom Bagshaw-Ray. Sub: Robin Ahitan (for Billy Willday)
Stafford Rangers Stripes (1) v PSV Stone (6)
Following their earlier disappointment, Stripes had to quickly re-group ahead of the game against a very gifted PSV side. Again, Stripes started well and more than matched their more experienced opponents. However, Stripes began to give PSV too much space and time on the ball and they showed their ability with 4 well taken goals to leave Stripes shell-shocked at half time.
Following a tough half time team talk, Stripes re-emerged with more desire in the second half, determined not to be embarrassed and the increased effort was there for all to see. Stripes worked hard to make life more difficult for PSV restricting them to a limited number of chances. PSV scored a further 2 goals but Stripes’ also created chances and Billy Willday scored with a great strike from outside of the box to restore some pride.
Man of the match was Harvey Gomersall who got in some great tackles and started several Stripes attacks with his passing.
Team: Joe Porter, Harvey Gomersall, Ryan Shaw, Haydn Jennings, Billy Willday, Robin Ahitan, Tom Bagshaw-Ray. Sub: Charlie Owen (for Tom Bagshaw-Ray)
Overall, a bit of a “baptism of fire” for Stripes in their first real games together as a team against more experienced opponents. However, there were some very encouraging signs particularly in the second half against PSV Stone when they started to compete and work hard for each other which bodes well for the season ahead.
